Massachusetts – Sophie Hughes Stokes is the founder and creative director of the sustainable jewelry line Sophie Hughes and of the Boston boutique Ore, which features work by local female designers who prioritize sustainability. Sophie has been awarded Best of Boston for her designs for three years running (2014-2016), and Sophie’s designs have been seen in InStyle, Glamour, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and on celebrities like Taylor Schilling.
Sophie grew up on the Maine coast, and had her first taste of jewelry making in an apprenticeship program during high school. She graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in Metalsmithing, founded her jewelry line in 2010, and opened up shop in Boston’s South End in 2013.
We hand-make each piece of jewelry individually in Sophie’s Boston studio, lofted above her shop Ore. Using timeworn hammers, anvils, hand tools, and torches we craft environmentally and socially responsible jewelry with the highest quality recycled gold and silver. We favor old mine cut diamonds (hand-cut centuries ago and reclaimed today from discarded heirlooms), for ethics and aesthetics both – values that ring true across all our work.
